Torba – Bodrum’s quiet neighbour

One of the quiet pebbly stretches of beach in Torba

During our house-buying trip we had afternoon meetings scheduled, but needed a quick excursion to fill the morning.  Although Red would have been content with meandering around the busy streets of Bodrum, I wanted to expand our horizons. So after checking a map, I figured Torba was close enough for a quick 1/2 day visit, and we could still get back to Bodrum in time for our meeting with the notary.

Bodrum Otogar

We headed to Bodrum otogar, and jumped on the first dolmuş heading to Torba.  On arrival, instead of heading to the main beach area, we walked north on Ataturk Cd. to look for a relaxing spot on the western edge of the bay to enjoy the warming rays of the sun, and the freshness of the Aegean.

We walked past small strips of beach, lined with sun loungers, and headed for one of the wooden jetties, serviced by the adjacent local restaurants and hotels. We eventually found a jetty that we liked the look of, but then had the difficult choice of relaxing on the romantic double sun-bed shrouded in a cotton canopy with billowing white curtains, or “slumming” it on the deck cushions.

Even though we were the only one’s on the jetty, we were advised there was a charge to use the double sun-bed. So romance be damned!  We unfolded our sarong’s and flopped down onto the the (free) lounging cushions!

Enjoy the Scenery

From here, we had a great view of Torba Bay and a panoramic vista of open sea.  It was a perfect spot for mellowing out, and watching the small boats and gullets drifting lazily past.

We spent the morning swimming and lounging, and it was a perfect setting to wallow in the tranquility of our late summer visit.  Even though it was quite a windy day, we were glad of the breeze to keep us cool, and it was also useful to air-dry us after our frequent dips in the water.

Lunch and Explore

After a delicious lunch, which was as enjoyable as the location, we wandered inland and along the waters edge to explore the nearby vicinity.  There were a couple of deserted strips of pebble beach, with crystal clear shallow water, and a little further along, a small clutch of fishing boats.

Convenient Treasure

Torba bay is one of the peninsula’s convenient treasures, well worth the short trip from Bodrum.  It’ll be interesting to visit again during high season, to see how much of the tranquility we enjoyed, is still evident.  Next time we might even make it to the beach or explore the town!

After our walk, it was time to return to Bodrum.  So we hopped back on the dolmuş and made in back to the notary in plenty of time.

A great 1/2 day adventure, that I’d love to repeat.  A morning well spent!
