We’re welcoming back Annie from Bodrum and Beyond Photography to share her perspective of Bodrum through the lens of her camera. She posts images of the Bodrum she discovers while walking around her local neighbourhood, and also other locations a little bit further afield.

This month’s theme is “Bodrum’s Ottoman Shipyard and Cemetery”. This location has been on my list for quite a while, so I’m pleased that Annie has shared her images with us.

Bodrum’s Ottoman Shipyard & Cemetery

A Snapshot of History: After the Russians set fire to the Ottoman fleet in Çeşme in 1775, Admiral Mustafa Paşa ordered the building of the shipyard in Bodrum to replace the ships that were lost. It’s situated near Bodrum marina, just before you get to the army camp.

The Ottoman cemetery is full of graves of famous Turkish seamen and soldiers. The Ottoman Tower at the front, which is often used as an art gallery, was built to protect the shipyard from pirate attacks. During restoration, the remains of Roman baths were discovered. This location is a very interesting and picturesque place to visit, with free admission!

Here’s a shot for anyone who still isn’t sure how to find the Shipyard. The entrance is through the glass doors in the building on the left. This is the front of the watch tower.

Meet Annie from Bodrum and Beyond Photography

Annie from Bodrum and Beyond PhotographyI’m a Scottish expat, who has spent the past 25 years living both here in Bodrum and Istanbul. I have a lovely Turkish husband, and we have a 17 year old son together.

Since living in Turkey, my husband and I have owned bars and restaurants, and more recently I’ve had a greeting card business selling my photographs to some of the big shops in the cities.

I love to go out with my camera recording the things that make up Bodrum’s unique personality.

I especially love the old and the rustic, and I’m constantly amazed at the rich history just below our feet. Even on the surface, there are door lintels, doorsteps and garden walls which have all been pillaged from much grander buildings. So much to see if we just open our eyes……..

I count myself very lucky living in such an amazing corner of the world.
