Introduction to Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Stand Up Paddle Boarding, also known as SUP, is the latest craze in water sports.  It is a trend that is making “surfers” out of everyone from Hawaii to Holland. The reason SUP is trending in such a huge way is it’s a very accessible and versatile water sport. The only equipment needed is a board, a paddle, and any body of water.  SUP is versatile because it can be done on any body of water be it lake, ocean, sea, river, creek or harbor.

Origins of Stand Up Paddle Boarding

SUP has its roots in Polynesia and Hawaiian heritage. The Hawaiian word for paddle board is Ku Hoe He’e Nalu which means to stand, to paddle, to surf a wave. Modern SUP also began in Hawaii where big wave surfers like Laird Hamilton used it as a cross training activity and as a way to surf with his kids. In 2000, paddle boarding began to be known as a sport in itself and has been transported around the world to become the fastest growing water sport worldwide.

The Pros of Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Paddle boarding can be done at a leisurely pace to cruise the coast line and get a tan, or can be used as a total body, cross training workout when done at a faster pace and in challenging water conditions.  Increasingly, paddle boards are being used as a platform for yoga and as a way to stay fit in general.

SUP gives the rider a unique perspective of standing on the water.  When standing on a board the rider is able to have views that are deep down as well as across the water that you wouldn’t get from any other water sport. SUP doesn’t require wind or waves, just an open body of water.

Through balance and propelling your body through water with a paddle a great core workout is achieved.  Recently, Stand Up Paddle boarding has become very popular among athletes and celebrities as a fun way to stay in shape and stay in the water even in winter months.SUP is a fabulous outdoor activity that knows no age limit and can be done as a family, with friends or alone.

Lessons

With an introductory lesson you will learn the basics of getting on and off your board and proper paddling and maneuvering techniques. The lesson begins on land with an SUP warm up, proper water safety and SUP etiquette. Then you will head into the sea or harbor and you’ll learn how to go from your knees to your feet and learn the proper standing and paddling techniques. You’ll learn to paddle the board through small waves and how to properly turn the board. With a lesson you will get to experience the beauty of the coastline and enjoy a day out on the water.
