It’s full name is The Castle of St. Peter the Liberator of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Rhodes, but for not surprisingly, it’s referred to quite simply as “Bodrum Castle”, as dominates the bay’s landscape.

It was originally built on a promontory in the bay, which was later joined to the mainland with a causeway made of debris and landfill.

In it’s history, Bodrum Castle has been used as a military garrison and a prison, and up until the late 1950s, the castle was unloved and in a state of disrepair.

In 1961, it was rescued by the Ministry of Culture, who established the Bodrum Museum in the castle, and the long renovation process began.  Today it’s recognized as one of the worlds greatest Underwater Archeology Museums.
