Weekly Market / Pazaar

Market day is Wednesday. It is a joy to attend compared to some of the larger markets filled with tourists. Here, you will rub shoulders with locals doing their weekly shopping.

You will meet the waiters who work in the restaurant you visited the night before and they will remember you and say ‘Merhaba‘ as they buy the fresh produce for the meze you will eat tonight. There is an abundance of fresh produce at incredible low prices.   The traders are so friendly – you will be offered a taste of everything – olives, cheese, Turkish delight, nuts, exotic fruit and veg.

The air is heavy with the fragrance of spices making you imagine the culinary sensation you will create at your next dinner party. If you are on a self catering holiday and enjoy cooking you will be in heaven here.  There are also other stalls to browse – clothes, bags, shoes, pashminas and the usual knick knacks and souvenirs common to all markets.

In summer-time you will also find a couple of stalls on the beach front which are lovely to browse at night time –  little or no English is spoken by the stall owners but they will convey their welcome and desire to help you with wonderful smiles and gestures.

There is no hard sell  and you can pick up some lovely hand made jewellery for a couple of Euro.

Supermarkets

There are branches of all the main Turkish supermarkets in Gündoğan – Migros, Tansaş, Dia, and BIM.

On the Yalikavak road out of Gündoğan there are a couple of large supermarkets including Kipa which is part of the UK-chain Tesco.

Many well known brands are available in the supermarkets in Gündoğan so don’t worry if you forget something you will probably find it here

Village Shops

There are a couple of small shops selling holiday fare and souveniers but for a real “retail experience”you will need to travel further afield.

ATM’s

There are a number of ATM’s in Gündoğan which take all major debit and credit cards
