Introduction to Bardakçı Bay
Bardakçı Bay has a small sandy beach, ringed by villa’s, resorts and hotels, on the coastline between Bodrum Harbour and Gumbet.
The translation of Bardack is “Cup”, and this bay was where the original inhabitants of Bodrum used to get their water from.
Bardakçı is also known in ancient myth as the Bay of Salmacis, the place where, Hermaphroditus, the son of the god Hermes and the goddess Aphrodite fell in love with the water nymph Salmacis.
The spring where the nymph played now bubbles up in the sea making the water cool on the hottest of days.
Location
Bardakçı Beach is 500 metres from Bodrum, and is one of the nearest bays and beaches to Bodrum town centre, which you can reach by land or sea.
Approximate distances to Bardakçı:
- 52km from Milas-Bodrum Airport
- 2km from Bodrum
- 1.5km from Gumbet
- 18km from Turgutreis
Getting There
You can reach Bardakçı by land or sea
- Catch a water taxi from Bodrum Marina (~5TL for a one-way trip). In the season these run about every 15 minutes. Catch it at the Jetty on Bardakçı Beach. You may need to wave it down as it sails past. Journey time 5 minutes.
- Dolmus to Bodrum Otogar to Bardakçı (~3TL)
- Dolmus runs in a loop from Bodrum Otogar, Bardakçı, Gumbet, Bodrum Otogar.
- You can catch the dolmus to Gumbet quite easily, but if you want to travel back to Bardakçı from Gumbet, you’ll have to ride the loop and go via Bodrum Otogar, so it’s easier to walk rather than ride this journey (walk would take 15-20 minutes).
- Walking distance to both Bodrum and Gumbet (although it does entail climbing a hill)
Things to do
Bardakçı is a resort beach, so there are the standard beach activities of sunbathing and some water sports, and the resorts offer their own selection of activities and spa services.
