Bodrum was the final destination of Melinda’s 2011 tour of Turkey. She transported me into her Bodrum Holiday adventure, with a few words and a collection of memorable photo’s.

One of the best things about publishing this website, is connecting with other travelers who are passionate about Turkey. It’s even better when they allow me to feature their content and photos.  So now you can join the adventure!

Bodrum has ancient roots, built well before the common era. Its ancient name, Halikarnassus is the site of the famous Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, another one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

This massive tomb stood for 1500 years but was unfortunately destroyed by earthquakes during the Middle Ages. There is little left of it to see today.

The Bodrum of today started out as a fishing villages but was transformed into the first Turkish town to really enjoy a tourist boom. Cuddling the Aegean Sea, it is a sailing destination. Boats and yachts of all sizes line its small port.

Bodrum also has a very active nightlife: restaurants, shops, clubs. Walking around town, especially in the evening, it was apparent that Turkey, in general, is booming while the rest of the world is in recession.

From here, we glimpsed the stone castle that anchors one end of the town, happy to know we’d be visiting there in a couple of days.

Afterward dinner, a few of us dove into the labyrinth of shops and clubs to search for live music. We ducked into a bar called Mandali where we sat outside near the water and ordered a couple of drinks.

The town was still hopping. But by now, it was close to midnight and we had more fun to endure tomorrow.
